Reptiles are exotic animals, each species with their own very specific requirements. It is the responsibility of each  keeper to research and learn the requirements of the reptile you keep. The key to prevention of most diseases and illnesses is simply proper husbandry. Providing the proper temperature, UVB, humidity, diet, supplements, substrate, and all aspects of required habitat is necessary for a healthy reptile.

Veterinary Research Article- Viruses in Reptiles

The above video demonstrates what happens when a turtle or tortoise is not cared for properly.  These reptiles are not easy pets; they require specific care, diet and housing and careful consideration must be taken before purchasing them.  The cute, tiny turtle you see in the pet store will live a very long time and is more responsibility than people think.
