When your reptile is lost in the house, the best way to search is to start at one corner of the room and work your way to the opposite corner. Remember that they can squeeze themselves into spaces that seem smaller than their bodies, and have been found up high in the curtains, and inside coats in the closet.
Bearded Dragon found in bag of clothes intended for
Goodwill donations |
The bearded dragon to the left was found sleeping in a bag of clothes waiting to be donated to Goodwill. People have found reptiles in trash, wrapped up in blankets and even in the laundry. It would be fairly easy to accidentally 'throw out' one of your reptiles and not realize it until it is too late.
Reptiles have been found inside a box spring mattress by entering through a small tear in the fabric, they have been known to hide in warm places like behind the refrigerator, and also in a semi-brumation on a cold concrete floor in a basement. They will often fall asleep and remain in the same place for days or weeks. |
Blue Tongue Skink hiding in a lava lamp package
|
Blue tongue skinks are low to the ground and enjoy being in tight areas and often squeeze themselves into very small spaces that you would normally not bother to look in. They can also climb and have been known to scale barriers that would hold other reptiles inside.
They have extremely slow metabolisms and can easily go weeks without food and still be found in good health. |
