While the love of reptiles brought the creators of Everything Reptile together; our mutual efforts in rescuing these animals helped truly solidify our friendships. We would spend hours discussing best care practices, give advice on how to handle a certain condition such as MBD, and shared our grief when we lost an animal but also our ecstatic joy when a reptile made leaps towards being healthy. We took, and continue to take, animals into our homes, and hearts, in hopes of giving them a fighting chance and a better life.
Three of us have now taken the step towards making our efforts official and have created rescue organizations in Florida, Massachusetts, and New York.
Florida is lucky to have Shanny and her rescue, Sweet Dragons Rescue & Rehab. Her organization focuses primarily on bearded dragons and strives to provide owners, and owners-to-be, with the best information on how to care for this species properly. Her website features a detailed care guide as well as a wonderful section on the proper diet for bearded dragons. While you are there, you can also browse through the stories on all of her rescued bearded dragons including the famous Papa Smurf who started it all.
In Massachusetts, I (Lauren) just kicked off my rescue called The Gecko Sanctuary. The Sanctuary is dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and re-homing geckos (and other reptiles and amphibians in need) in the New England area. Similar to Shanny, I am also driven towards education and want to help people get the information they need to ensure their gecko is happy and healthy.
Last, but most certainly not least, is Amanda's rescue in New York, Dragon Heart Rescue and Sanctuary. Amanda takes in bearded dragons, often those with advanced conditions or those who have suffered severe neglect, and gives 110% to help them on their road to recovery. Amanda has tackled respiratory infections, missing limbs, and MBD to name just a few. Bearded Dragons that end up in Amanda's care will always receive the best.
We hope to share with you all our rescue efforts as Everything Reptile and our organizations expand.
