quarantine

The word "quarantine" originates from the Venetian dialect form of the Italian quaranta giorni, meaning 'forty days'. This is due to the 40 day isolation of ships and people prior to entering the city of Dubrovnik in Dalmatia (formerly known as Ragusa). This was practiced as a measure of disease prevention related to the Black Death.   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quarantine

Quarantine should always be practiced for any new reptile you are bringing into your home. Aside from hand washing it is the number one prevention against the spread of disease thru out other reptiles you may have. Quarantine allows time to monitor the new reptile as they are notorious experts at hiding illness and some diseases take a period of time to incubate before they becomes apparent. As a responsible reptile keeper it is important and necessary to be familiar with and practice quarantine when bringing a new reptile into your home. Having a separate room for quarantine is best but not always possible in a home situation. Designating an area in a room away from your other reptiles and keeping the new reptile in that space will serve as a quarantine area.
